Throwback Thursdays: “They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.)”

“When I date back I recall a man off the family tree
My right hand Poppa Doc I see
Took me from a boy to a man so I always had a father
When my biological didn’t bother”

It’s incredible how much content someone can pack in a couple of bars, especially with an old school flow!

For this week’s Throwback Track, we have “They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.)” by Pete Rock and CL Smooth. The song is mainly about the rappers taking the time to think about their friend Troy Dixon, who died of an accidental fall on tour. In an interview with Village Voice, Pete Rock said he “just started crying” during the process of making the song, and we can understand why. The song truly captures raw emotion and channels it into art, which is what hip hop is about.

The lyrical flow and the beat, also remixed by Lupe Fiasco on his song “Around My Way (Freedom Ain’t Free)“, affirm that Pete Rock and CL Smooth’s head-bobbing track is a classic from the 90’s – a time that is fondly remembered as being a great period for hip hop.

Let us know what you think of this song in the comments, and remember to stay tuned for next week’s Throwback Track!
